Project Brief

Kirby Mountain Retreat is an exploration of architectural integration within a rugged and evocative landscape.

Situated along a steep ridgeline north of Lenoir, North Carolina, and abutting the Pisgah National Forest, the retreat occupies a site of exceptional natural beauty and isolation.

A New Life for the Landscape

The design responds to the clients’ aspiration for a dwelling that offers respite from the pressures of urban life while fostering a deeper connection to the rhythms of the mountains.

Rather than imposing itself on the land, the home is embedded into the mountainside, allowing the terrain to dictate its form and presence. Framed by expansive views toward Grandfather Mountain and the western horizon, Kirby Mountain Retreat is a quiet, contemplative residence where architecture and landscape are inextricably linked, and where the experience of place is both grounding and transformative.
