Principal Architect

Mark is the founding principal of Vellum Architects. A Virginia Beach native, he studied architecture at Virginia Tech, and is licensed in Virginia, Colorado, and North Carolina.

Throughout his life, he has traveled to over forty countries, lived abroad in Spain, and spent significant time working in Italy. These experiences have come to define a design philosophy deeply rooted in the concept of “place making,” which recognizes the unique beauty of each site, and the importance of respecting and enhancing a project’s surroundings.

With a career expanding over 23 years, and award-winning projects across the world, Mark and his team at Vellum Architects specialize on custom residential architecture and luxury resort restoration and preservation.

Mark is a leader in sustainable design, and holds a Green Globe certification for sustainable tourism. Vellum’s Brasada Ranch in Bend, Oregon, was the first resort in the US to earn LEED Gold certification, and was named Sustainable Community of the Year in 2007.

His extensive portfolio in the hospitality sector also includes award-winning projects in both the US and Italy. Among Vellum’s works is Castello di Casole, in Tuscany, Italy, which was named amongst the top three hotels in the world by Travel and Leisure Magazine; and, The Sebastian, in Vail, Colorado, ranked in the top three resorts in the continental United States.

When he is not traveling the world, or working on Vellum’s next project, the best place to find Mark is out in nature on one of his adventures! Whether it is skiing down the slopes of Colorado, or paddle boarding the French Broad River, he will be there, enjoying the outdoors along with his wife Heather, and their son Quinton!
